Every Dog Has Its Day Care: Innovative Repurposing of Blighted Industrial
 Property

In 1997, Lauren Westreich realized dogs needed something to do while their owners were away from home. That thought turned into reality when she opened a small facility on 65th Street in Emeryville with just a handful of dogs. Those dogs had play equipment, a small outside area, and games. From day one, they were always under the careful supervision of Lauren and her crew. Laurens first expansion came five years later, when, in 2001 she and the dogs moved 2 streets over to 63rd Street. Every Dog raised the bar by adding artificial turf, elaborate play equipment, a bubbling fountain, and a retractable roof, and always with quality in mind, Every Dog grew to a staff of over 30 humans.

In 2015, Every Dog took 17 years of knowledge and experience to usher in a new era of daycare for dogs, converting a beautiful, old, 50,000 sf industrial warehouse in Oak Center neighborhood, West Oakland, into a state-of-the-art dog care facility. It is located at 16th and Poplar, site of a former 8-acre blighted former brownfield site operated by Carnation dairy. The utilized resources from across the animal kingdom to bring the very best, safest, and most fun options to the dogs: floors from the equine community, toys found in zoos, mechanical equipment from shelters and vet clinics, and the list goes on. Every Dog provides daycare for dogs – including a puppy nursery for our youngest clients, an overnight Dog Hotel, spa and grooming facilities, and special care environments for dogs who are convalescing.

Every Dog’s 12 indoor-outdoor daycare spaces offer many options for doggie entertainment and exploration. Fresh water and canine bathrooms are available at all

times. 3 retractable roof structures keep the dogs dry in the rainy season and cool during the summer. Outdoor play yards feature play structures complete with slides, tunnels, a swinging bridge, and climbing platforms. Indoors there are textured rubber floors, which are easy on paws even when wet, along with agility equipment, toys, and comfy beds for relaxing.

Every Dog has become an active partner with the West Oakland community, reaching out to local associations early in the process, to schools, community groups, and agencies, participating in career fairs and providing work-study and employment to our neighbors. Every Dog works with rescue organizations and foster dogs while they await forever homes. Their Continuing Education Program encourages (and pays for) employees to increase their dogs skills to make advancements within our company. Every Dog Founder/Owner Lauren Westreich is herself a testament to this commitment to the local. Joining the West Oakland Commerce Association Board, Lauren’s knowledge of public governance and planning, evident in the great revitalization of this site, contributing to the revitalization started by neighboring business, Auto Chlor, and to West Oakland.
